Glass Bottom Boats
Glass bottom boats are fitted with sections of glass (or other materials like plexi-glass) underneath the draft line, which allow passengers to see underwater while remaining inside the boat. These types of boats are almost always used for tours, although they do have limited use in marine exploration and research. Glass bottom boats can be found in practically every seaside tourist town. First used in California in the '60s, glass bottom boats are also very popular in Florida, and along the Gulf Coast. Typically, tours include reefs, ship wrecks, and underwater vegetation such as the great kelp fields on the California coast. Foreign destinations include the great barrier reefs of Australia, the rocky shores of the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and South Pacific islands (such as Jamaica, Mexico, Palau, Tahiti, and Vanauatu).
